Doctor of Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy is the therapy of “doing.” Whatever you do with your life, we are here to dissolve barriers and promote optimal flow. Life is constantly in motion, existing within context. I studied Occupational Therapy because of my own need to perform in a somewhat alien world, learning about the mind, body, and spirit as they are all connected. I am certified to work with physical ailments such as carpal tunnel, burns, amputations, paralysis, anything that requires rehabilitation in the form of getting us back to doing the occupations we love to do; my affinity is for occupations of the mind. As a licensed doctor of occupational therapy I am legally certified to perform psychotherapy, be it cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing, and general talk therapy counseling. I am considered a Qualified Mental Health Practitioner. My preferred model of practice is the Kawa Model. Kawa, meaning “river” in Japanese, is a therapeutic metaphor to explain the life flow as it is contained within the environment of the river walls (political/social/cultural climate). This flow of life’s river can be impeded by stubborn barrier boulders (ailments, heart aches, financial losses), and supported by the plants and driftwood that flow alongside us (friends & family, hobbies, clubs).
